The title NOVENA comes from the Latin expression “novem”, signifying “nine”
A novena is normally 9 days’ of personalized and / or common devotion from the Catholic Church to get special graces. While these are not necessarily an element of our own liturgy and even continue to be a “popular devotion” (virtually none are actually prayed paraliturgically), they have been prayed ever since the dawn of the Church — in addition novenas where know to be said even before the official founding on the church.
Mary as well as Apostles prayed from Jesus’ Ascension through to the Pentecost, which was 9 days and nights (Acts 1). Furthermore, a 9 day time of supplication was basically a pagan Roman & Eastern practice, hence novenas have been readily recognized through initial converts in most of these areas.
Typically the Christian and Jewish interpretation with the number “9″ became part of Christian believing relating to the question, when “9″ has been relating to suffering, dispair, & imperfection, This defined it as an appropriatte number meant for anytime “man’s imperfection turned in prayer to God” (Catholic Encyclopedia). St. Jerome wrote that “the number nine in Holy Writ is indicative of suffering and grief” (Ezechiel, vii, 24).
Novenas, in that case, however, not automatically, possess feelings of “urgency”; they can be normally suitable for special intentions, for yourself or a loved one; (“I’ll say a novena for you”).
Novenas to specified Saints are often times designed consistent with the specific Saint’s patronage; for instance., because of the New Testament letter asking Christian believers to persevere when facing persecution, Saint Jude is the patron of desperate conditions & “hopeless” causes and so someone that finds him or her self or even a loved one in really bad circumstances could make a novena to St. Jude. To that end it is customary, soon after completing your novena to St. Jude, to show a public expression of your appreciation. This is why you see the mysterious “thank you” notices to St. Jude which you may find in the local newspaper’s Classifieds section).
In General you will find 4 primary types of novenas (one novena may well fit many categoies):
- Novenas of mourning, for example the novena made over the novemdiales — the actual 9 day time period following a passing of any Pope.
- Novenas of preparation, or “anticipation, ” like the Christmas or Easter.
- Novenas* novenas of prayer* the indulgenced novenas
In certain novenas, an identical prayer is prayed daily for 9 days, or occasionally, the same prayer is recited nine times in one day;
A few “novenas” might not be accurately termed “novenas” because the number 9 has no relation to the prayer in any respect, but these prayers may still keep the label – Novena.
Whenever a Novena is actually prayed for objectives of any Feast, its commonly initiated in a way that it finishes on the day prior to a Feast; To find out when to begin with a Novena with anticipation of any Feast, calculate Ten days back from your Feast, while using the Feast day itself to count as “one”.
Please remember a few select folks may think of praying Novenas in some kind of superstitious way. One should be wary of a Novena having guidelines which include words and phrases like: “say this prayer for 9 consecutive days and your wish will be granted to you” or claim the Novena is to “never fail”.
These types of assertions lead some to think the we think we have some kind of divine right and privilege to demand whatever we want – whenever we want from God. While the Novena itself may have all good intentions… associating with or suggesting terms like; “wishes granted” and “never fail” would best be avoided.
